Earlier this week the US Supreme Court rolled back the decision of lower courts to extend the absentee ballot deadline in Wisconsin — effectively silencing thousands of voters.

Even with so much going on in our nation and around the world, we cannot forget about protecting our democracy.

Voters should not be forced to choose between their health and civic duty during a pandemic, and that is why we're calling for Congress to act now and lay the groundwork for universal vote-by-mail.

Sign our open letter to Congress demanding that our leaders take action to protect our democracy.

During a pandemic there is no reason why voters should be forced to gather in large groups, wait outside in long lines, or touch shared surfaces. Universal vote-by-mail would enable the safe exercise of our most basic right, and increase voting accessibility more broadly.

In addition to universal vote-by-mail, we're urging our leaders in Congress and in state governments to take the following steps to ensure the safety of all voters:

• Expand early voting and online voter registration to help reduce crowds and increase access to safe, in-person voting.
• Mail every registered voter a ballot and pre-paid postage envelope to encourage voting by mail.
• Ban states from purging voter rolls during this crisis unless requested by the voter.

These steps would ensure that all voters are able to participate in our democracy safely during this crisis.

Congress must act now to protect our voters and our democracy. Sign our letter today demanding our leaders take action and enact legislation for universal vote-by-mail.
