Friend,

Americans United is filing a friend-of-the-court brief today urging the U.S. Supreme Court to protect access to reproductive health care for all, regardless of their employer’s or university’s religious beliefs, in a significant case that is supposed to be heard this term.

At a time when some politicians are using the coronavirus as a cynical excuse to impose their religious beliefs on everyone by blocking access to abortion and reproductive care for those in need, we need to make it clear that reproductive freedom is religious freedom.

The case SCOTUS is about to hear involves Trump administration rules that would allow employers and universities to impose their religious views on employees and students to deny them access to birth control. These are the same rules that Americans United is challenging in a lawsuit we filed with the National Women’s Law Center and the Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of University of Notre Dame students. In January, we scored a major court victory when the judge allowed our case to proceed, and we need to ensure that the Supreme Court doesn’t undermine our success at this critical moment.

Everything we fight for at AU is personal to me, but as a woman and a religious minority, this issue has particular meaning: Our constitutional promise of religious freedom means we all get to live as our true selves and make our own decisions about religion and reproductive care. Reproductive freedom is religious freedom, friend, and even during times of national crisis, our freedoms must be protected with as much dedication as ever. That’s why our work on this issue is running full-steam ahead.

Please donate today to help AU stop the government from privileging employers’ religious beliefs over their employees’ reproductive freedom: [link removed]

Religion-based objections to birth control and abortion access are inseparable from the larger Christian nationalist movement, which seeks to misuse religious freedom to undermine all of our rights. Our expertise in keeping religion and government separate is uniquely suited to this challenge.

Thank you in advance for your support during this difficult and uncertain time.

In solidarity,

Rachel K. Laser
