President's Note

Phase I of the Muslim Musical Mosaic Project is Here!

For many years now I have been wanting to create a celebrative musical event, something that reflects our progressive and
inclusive values, and something that can be produced as an Eid event. The first step to fulfilling that vision is to anchor
it in our musical history, the music the enslaved Muslims brought to America, gnawa, which then led to blues, country and
jazz.

Phase I of the Muslim Musical Mosaic: MPV will be putting on a “live” event, a hybrid of a panel discussion of that history
and musical performances to illustrate it, but, with a twist!

Speakers and performers:

Professor Mark Levine (University of California, Irvine), Lu Fuki, Alfred Madian, Farah Mitha, Tazeen Ayub, Aiman Khan, and
Ani Zonneveld

the Humanities. Visit ( [link removed] )www.calhum.org ( [link removed] ) for more information.

On May 20th, MPV is teaming up with women-led synagogues in hosting the Parent’s Circle, Palestinian and Israeli parents who
have lost a child/ren to the conflict. Please see the details below.

To catch up, last month I was interviewed by the Unreasonable podcast. Please check out the long form interview here ( [link removed] ). I also spoke at Americans United for the Separation of Religion and State
annual Religious Freedom Summit. My presentation was titled “When the Religious Right Come Together”, where I presented
evidence of the Muslim Right’s partnership with the Christian Right around LGBTQIA+ issues.

On May 14, I will be presenting a paper of our initiative #ImamsForShe at the Global Women Rights in Islam Conference In
Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The conference is co-organized by Muhammadiyah Society, Faith to Action Network and al-Azhar University, which will also
publish the papers presented. I am super excited about this as our work is catching on in the conservative circles.

Onward and upward…

Chapter Updates

MPV San Francisco

Members of MPV San Francisco gathered at dinner to mark Eid ul Fitr at Bab al Yemen restaurant in Oakland. Members have also
been active in their communities as the events in Gaza and Palestine have continued to be center stage for all. From Santa
Cruz to Stanford, and from Berkeley to San Francisco, as well as online, members have been engaging with protests, sober
meditation, support efforts, and boycotts.

Muslims in the Bay Area mourned the loss of Imam Abu Qadir Al-Amin, a pillar of the community. Imam Al-Amin was a former
death row inmate who benefitted from the Innocence Project and becoming a pioneer in supporting others, as an Imam, a
scholar, and an activist. It is in Love we are made, in Love we disappear, as Director Emeritus, Imam Philip Tuley reminds us
all.
