Hello Friend,
Four dead in Ohio. 54 years ago. I still remember that day all too
clearly. It was my first day of resistance.
As a middle schooler I was already speaking out against the Vietnam
War but not really participating in any protests. Older brothers of
friends were being drafted, moving to Canada, going to jail. Campuses
were rising up but the idea of college to me was dorm life, debate,
hanging out on the quad. Then four students were murdered on their
campus by young men their age, militarized by the U.S. war machine at
home.
I was horrified and angry. With homemade black armbands I organized
a walk-out the next day. My first suspension for political organizing
in public school. No surprise my path led me to 20+ years of
organizing in the only political party that stands unwaveringly for
peace - the Green
Party.
On this 54th anniversary of the murders at Kent State, a day of
shame, we need to recognize the commitment and bravery of students
around the country today as they have risked diplomas, scholarships
and possibly career opportunities by organizing encampments in
opposition to genocide and the complicity of their universities in
funding it. An increasingly militarized police force has violently
arrested and assaulted students and staff on campuses in the last
several days. Its heart
wrenching to see.
Green Party candidates and organizers around the country have been
standing arm in arm with these students risking arrests alongside them
or providing support and supplies for the encampments. We stand in
solidarity with the students’ right to protest and their demands which
include a permanent ceasefire and an end to military funding to
Israel.
Your
monthly donation to the Green Party fuels our advocacy
and helps our principled anti-war candidates with ballot access and
outreach. Can you chip in today?
In solidarity,
