Young people are impacted by the devastation of climate change and natural disasters more than anyone else – but they are also leading the fight to fix our climate crisis before it is too late. 

This spring, our team at Future Coalition has been highlighting the need to pass the  Green New Deal, which along with significant action to combat the effects of climate change, would help create more affordable housing across the country.

Since her first term, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has fought to pass the Green New Deal as an original cosponsor of the bill because she understands how young people like herself are impacted by the effects of climate change, which includes the scarcity of affordable public housing.  

For decades, public housing has been overlooked and underfunded, leaving those who need it vulnerable. Young people are disproportionately affected by the public housing crisis and rising rent prices, forcing some to spend over 50% of their paycheck to afford rent. So Rep. Ocasio-Cortez introduced the Green New Deal for Public Housing, which aims to increase available public housing, lower energy costs, and make our communities more resilient to environmental disasters.  

The Green New Deal for Public Housing would: 

• Invest in over $234 billion to upgrade units to be more energy efficient;

• Allow for the construction of new public housing developments;

• Create unionized green jobs;

•  Expand young people’s access to affordable, energy efficient housing.
