John,

This crisis has shown us that we need leadership we can trust.

Unfortunately, we have seen the opposite from our current representatives. On the first day doctors confirmed the coronavirus had made its way to the United States, South Korea also confirmed their first case — there was a big difference in how we handled it. South Korea took this threat very seriously. They mobilized, implemented massive testing, but most importantly, they did not downplay the virus.

Here in the US, our president brushed off the virus as nothing more than the flu in order to “save” the economy and stave off an electoral threat. His inaction condemned thousands of Americans to death. And Trump wasn’t alone.

As ranking member of Foreign Affairs, Michael McCaul would have seen medical intelligence about the vast threat as early as November — and did nothing. Then early this year, one of Trump’s top advisors, Peter Navarro, explicitly warned of "an increasing probability of a full-blown COVID-19 pandemic that could infect as many as 100 million Americans, with a loss of life of as many as 1-2 million souls."

Instead of protecting constituents, McCaul followed Trump’s playbook of ignore, deny and deflect. When he knew he could no longer downplay the pandemic, McCaul found someone else to blame — China.

McCaul’s dangerous rhetoric gave Texans a false sense of security, allowing the virus to spread freely, and stoked the flames of Asian-American bigotry in our country.

We need leadership in Washington that will fight for what is right regardless of what benefits them. That is why I am running for Congress. Let’s send McCaul to an early retirement and restore real representation back to the Texas 10th. [[link removed]]

Fighting for you,
Mike Siegel
