Recently, there’s been a fierce debate among Rhode Island history watchers on what we should call today: Royal Renunciation Day or Rhode Island Independence Day. |
Some may think Rhode Islanders might be acknowledging our freedom from the Crown early, but in my heart, we should celebrate our independence today — and every day! |
As the smallest state, we know our courage far exceeds our size. Over 248 years ago, Rhode Island’s lively experiment advanced the profound belief that the government derives its powers from the consent of the governed. |
All these years later, the promise embedded in our declaration may apply to every American, but I know it might not always feel so. It is not just important to know our history and our founding documents, but that we can work towards a better tomorrow for all. |
With your support, together we can make these beliefs a reality, both in Rhode Island and in the halls of Congress. |
