John,
Today, local elections are taking place across Texas, including several key communities where Ground Game Texas has been organizing.
In Lubbock, voters will have the opportunity to adopt “Freedom Act Lubbock,” a marijuana reform ballot proposition developed by local group Lubbock Compact in collaboration with Ground Game Texas. Our campaign has brought statewide attention to West Texas, and Lubbock voter turnout is reaching record levels. It has also been an opportunity to grow progressive local organizing in new and innovative ways.
Our partner Lubbock Compact collected over 10,000 signatures to qualify the ballot proposition. Along the way, they registered hundreds of new voters and activated dozens of first-time political volunteers who care about issues like racial justice and drug policy. The campaign has encountered strong opposition, unfortunately, with a conservative megachurch and GOP representatives fighting us hard. But the Lubbock campaign is already successful in multiple ways and is laying the groundwork for progressive political gains for years to come.
There are no “off cycles” for Ground Game Texas. We are activating voters year-round to build momentum for long-term change. Can you chip in $25 to support today’s voter turnout programs?
In Harker Heights, our friend Stacey Wilson is running for re-election to the City Council. We started working with Stacey over two years ago, when she helped us gather signatures for marijuana reform petition campaigns in Killeen and Harker Heights, two cities located one hour north of Austin. Stacey’s background includes two decades of experience as a businesswoman, strong leadership in the local African-American community, and deep engagement with the veterans community along with her husband Charles, who served at nearby Fort Hood. When her local council person refused to support our ballot measure—even though 64% of voters had voted in support—Stacey ran for City Council, and won.
Ground Game is knocking doors and sending text messages for Stacey Wilson, who has been a champion for rural voters who were previously ignored by City Hall. Support this work today!
Let’s get out the vote, y’all!
With appreciation,
Ground Game Texas
