John,
The United States spends more on its military than any other country in the world, yet there are still millions of Americans whose most basic needs of food, housing, health care, and education are not met.
A huge majority of the U.S. federal budget goes to the Department of Defense (DoD), — not critical programs to support and enrich our communities. What’s more, the DoD failed an audit for the sixth straight time, failing to explain $1.9 trillion in spending ― over half of its $3.8 trillion budget.
Wasteful spending by the DoD must end. Join us and sign the petition to call on Congress to invest in everyday Americans.
The Department of Defense is the only federal agency that has never passed a full audit and it wasn’t even subject to audits until 2018. Congressmembers in the pocket of the DoD and defense lobbyists still aim to create a secretive fiscal commission to cut funding to Medicaid, SNAP, housing, and other critical social programs to allocate even MORE money to the DoD.
60 Minutes revealed recently that federal military contractors have engaged in drastic price gouging ― sometimes making profits near 40%!
Lockheed Martin is one of the biggest players here, In 2021, 71% of Lockheed Martin’s $67 billion of net sales were generated from the U.S. Government―including 62% from the DoD. In 2023, their effective tax rate was cut by over half due to the passage of the 2017 Trump-GOP tax scam.
It is unfathomable that the Department of Defense cannot account for trillions of dollars in spending while our communities struggle.
We demand that Congress protect against this waste, enforce limits on defense spending, and prioritize the needs of American families.
Thank you,
Democratic Values
