John,

The APWU’s number one priority in the past six weeks has been the health and safety of postal workers and that of the public. As part of that work, we are making sure that the people we elect to Washington, D.C. provide the support we need to do the job.

You can help make that happen by sending them a message here.

The Coronavirus crisis is putting strain on every part of the Postal Service, especially on postal workers. Postal costs are also increasing, including for the safety items we need and the extra leave that we require to care for ourselves and our loved ones. At the same time, postal revenue is expected to drop sharply in the coming months.

We cannot let a public health crisis trigger a postal finance crisis.

As postal workers, we are providing an essential service to the country. Without our work, people sheltering in place would lose prescriptions, small businesses would fold without affordable delivery, and families would miss essential supplies.

But when Congress and the President approved the huge two-trillion dollar stimulus package, they provided aid for businesses such as airlines ($61 billion), private cargo shippers ($17 billion) and other corporations ($425 billion). While much needed financial relief for the Postal Service was originally included in the House of Representatives’ version of the stimulus, the final bill that the President signed into law all but left us out.

This has to change. Fortunately, if we can make our voices heard to both the White House, and Congress, we can ensure that the Postal Service gets the support it deserves from lawmakers in the next stimulus. That’s why you need to write a message now.

Members of Congress need to hear your story about how the Postal Service is helping the country persevere in these hard times. This is a list of things they must do in the next stimulus bill:

  • Invest $25 billion in the Postal Service now to help it weather the pandemic and the deep recession it is causing.
  • Keep our Postal Service running during the crisis with quarterly payments to cover the Postal Service’s increased costs and decreased income.
  • Treat the Postal Service like other employers by funding the cost of COVID-19 related sick leave and family medical leave introduced by the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
  • Any legislation to provide and fund COVID-19 related hazard pay must include postal workers, who face heightened exposure risks to the virus on a daily basis.
  • Stop the Treasury department from forcing operational and policy changes on the Postal Service as a condition for borrowing, and remove the annual limit on borrowing authorities.

We are proud of the public service we provide, but we cannot do it without the support of our elected representatives. That’s why they need to hear from you! We need to act and we need to act now.

Send a message to your Senators and U.S. Representative. Tell them to provide urgent and ongoing support for the US Postal Service.

Tell them that they must give our Post Service the resources it needs to keep America moving in this time of crisis.

In Solidarity,

Mark Dimondstein, President and Judy Beard, Legislative & Political Director
