The gun industry is back at it again, friend.

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act closed loopholes in the Brady Background Check system that allowed unlicensed gun dealers to circumvent background checks when selling firearms for profit, including at gun shows and on online marketplaces. These loopholes contributed to approximately 1 in 5 guns being sold WITHOUT a background check. Just weeks ago, we celebrated as the intent of this bill was finalized through a new federal rule change championed by the Biden administration and advocates like you, friend.

Now, the gun industry has filed three lawsuits to challenge this life-saving rule.

Friend, I am not surprised that the gun industry, and the attorneys general they helped elect, are challenging this rule. For far too long, the gun industry has put profits above people. Challenging an expansion of background checks, which is supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans, is just another example of this deadly pattern.

Brady Background Checks save lives. In fact, since the Brady Bill was enacted, nearly 4.9 million prohibited gun transactions have been prevented, saving countless lives. But if we don’t uphold this rule, deadly loopholes will remain, and there is no telling how many more Americans we will lose to gun violence.

Brady will do everything in our power to defend this rule and bring us closer to a nation free from gun violence. But we can’t do this work alone. We know the gun lobby and its allies will stop at nothing to sink this rule in the courts. So will you please support our efforts to push back against the gun industry and close these deadly loopholes with a gift today? [[link removed]]

We Updated Brady’s Gun Store Transparency Project!

Brady’s Gun Store Transparency Project has been updated — and hundreds more gun dealer inspection reports are now available to the public.

[link removed] [[link removed]]

For decades, the gun lobby has fought to keep Americans in the dark about gun industry business practices that contribute to gun violence. There is little to no transparency into whether gun dealers are following the law or if federal authorities are holding them accountable.

That’s why we spent years filing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and fighting in the courts to secure more than 80,000 pages of federal inspection reports of gun dealers cited for violations— and that number continues to grow.

Brady’s Gun Store Transparency Project maps gun stores that have been cited by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for breaking the law. It is the largest database of ATF inspection reports ever released to the public and is constantly being updated. Our database now includes 4,069 reports, including 644 new reports we released this week.

The newest update also includes an improved method of searching and viewing dealers with more than one inspection report. This vital tool will help lawmakers, researchers, and the public uncover reckless gun dealer practices and develop solutions to address our nation’s gun violence crisis.

Please join us in visiting Brady’s Gun Store Transparency Project and exploring our map of gun stores that have been cited for violations. [[link removed]]

Join us in Recognizing Teacher Appreciation Week

Next week (May 6-10) is Teacher Appreciation Week! We and our partners at We and our partners at Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence, the American Federation of Teachers, and the National Parent Teacher Association want to extend our gratitude to teachers for the work they do, shaping the minds of the next generation. And to show our gratitude, we are working to give teachers the best gift we can think of: schools that are free of gun violence.

Teachers play a critical role in educating our youth and shaping them into future leaders of our country. Yet senseless gun violence, both on and off school premises, has forced our teachers to focus on protecting their students and helping them deal with the fear, trauma, and grief caused by gun violence.

Since the Columbine Shooting in 1999, there have been 404 school shootings and over 370,000 K-12 students have experienced gun violence at school. This is unacceptable. Teachers should be focused on teaching, not practicing lockdown drills with their students and preparing for the very real threat of a shooting.

That is why we are saying ENOUGH! And if you agree that our teachers deserve better, please join us in calling for the best gift of all next week: strong gun laws that keep our schools and communities safe. [[link removed]]
