The Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to those who have made
extraordinary contributions to the United States and the world.
When presenting Mike with the Medal, President Biden said, "From finance to
media to philanthropy, Michael Bloomberg has revolutionized our economy. He's
transformed how we consume information... He's challenged us as well, to solve
the toughest challenges, from gun violence to climate change. And as mayor, he
rebuilt the City of New York after 9/11, channeling our spirit of resilience as
a nation and a beacon to the world."
As an entrepreneur and global business leader, three-term mayor of America's
largest city, and one of the world's most generous philanthropists, Mike's
commitment and leadership have helped make progress on many of the toughest
global issues -- and saved millions of lives. Across the U.S. and around the
world, he continues to drive action to fight the climate crisis, expand access
to high-quality education, invest in arts and culture, prevent gun violence,
strengthen hundreds of cities globally, and more.
After receiving the award, Mike credited the many people who made those
accomplishments possible: "I'm deeply honored to receive the Presidential Medal
of Freedom from President Biden. But this honor doesn't just belong to me. I
hope everyone who has worked at Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies over the
years, or served New York City during our administration, takes pride in what
we have been able to achieve together."
