Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies College Parade

Dear friends and partners,

As the days get longer and the end of the school year draws closer, we are hard at work supporting the success of our school communities. This week, I was thrilled to join Region West on National Principal’s Day to recognize the great work and dedication of our school leaders.

But the festivities didn’t end there. Just this morning, I participated in SOCES’ College Parade to celebrate the accomplishments of their graduating class. All across the district, seniors are finalizing their college and career plans and preparing to transition into an increasingly complex world — and our goal is to provide the support and resources necessary to ensure their success. We are also gearing up for another exciting year of free summer programming! Click here to RSVP for our upcoming webinar to learn more about the different academic and enrichment offerings ([link removed]) available this summer to all LAUSD students.

Finally, the Board is also busy preparing for next year, including putting the final touches on a budget in a challenging fiscal year. I will continue to advocate for a budget that puts students first, prioritizes equity, and gives our school communities the flexibility and support they need to thrive.

Onward,

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
In the last few weeks, my team and I were thrilled to attend the LAUSD Arts Fest, join Region West's Principal's Day event, celebrate Revere MS's new library ribbon-cutting, participate in the SOCES College Parade and Region West College Commitment Day and Career Fair, join the LAX Coastal Chamber awarding grants to exceptional Westchester educators, plant trees at Cowan ES for Earth Day, visit current and future school gardens at Walgrove ES and Venice HS, and visit classrooms at Mark Twain MS, Beethoven ES, Nestle ES and preschool, and Tarzana ES.

In the Spotlight: A Teacher Helps Launch Speech & Debate at Uni HS!
Last school year, University High's AP World History teacher James Adams teamed up with three students to create Uni's first official Speech and Debate team! Through lots of trial and error, the new team has built an inclusive community on campus, focused on growth and camaraderie. At the end of their first year, a student qualified for the Speech and Debate National Tournament and placed 4th in the nation for Original Spoken Word Poetry! This year, the team has expanded to 27 students with 3 dedicated coaches, lots of parent volunteers, and 4 hours per week of after-school training. As they continue competing and accumulating wins, this summer they are headed to Des Moines, Iowa, to represent Uni and LAUSD at the National Speech and Debate tournament—and we'll be cheering them on every step of the way!
