Yesterday, President Biden announced the expansion of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. This will include another 105,919 acres of the mountains, on top of the existing 346,177 acres. We have long advocated for this, introducing legislation into the House of Representatives to add to this Monument. This expansion will protect historical, cultural, and natural land as well as provide additional recreational space for visitors for years to come. The San Gabriel Mountains are home to many Indigenous peoples, as well as diverse wildlife. This expansion will provide protected lands for people, plants, and animals alike and shows an increased commitment to saving our planet and fighting the consequences of climate change. From protecting the water supply for one-third of Los Angeles County to increasing access to nature, the expansion of this Monument is very important to CA-28. We look forward to supporting President Biden in protecting these public lands for Angelenos and visitors alike. Earlier this week, President Biden also introduced his new climate policies, including the authorization of the revitalized Climate Corps. The Climate Corps will add 2,000 positions for young people dedicated to working towards environmental preservation. With their newly launched website, jobs across 36 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico are available to advance climate resilience through conservation and clean energy. Judy has been a pioneer of strengthening the Climate Corps, introducing legislation aimed at bolstering this program in 2019 and then again in 2021. She has worked for years to bring this policy to fruition, and we are pleased that the Biden Administration prioritizes job growth and climate resilience as much as Judy does. These two steps taken by the Biden Administration are huge climate victories and show President Biden’s dedication to fighting for our environment.
