When women could make their own healthcare decisions You are receiving this email as a subscriber to updates from Mothers For Democracy, a national movement created by the parent organizers at Mothers Against Greg Abbott. Hi Friend,

I remember a time when women still had the right to make their own healthcare decisions. The year was 2021, and abortion was legal in every state. The average American woman lived less than 24 miles from a clinic, and **93% of women in the south — even those of us here in Texas — lived less than 100 miles from a clinic.**

Those days seem like a distant memory now. Once the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, far-right state legislators across the south went on a rights-slashing free-for-for all, outlawing most or all abortions. And women needing reproductive care started traveling across state lines to one of the few remaining places where abortion care was still accessible — a common choice was the state of Florida.

With Florida’s abortion ban taking effect two days ago, that's no longer an option —now **just 21% of women in the south** live within 100 miles of a clinic.

**Nearly 60% of southern women are now more than 300 miles from the nearest clinic** that can legally perform an abortion beyond six weeks of pregnancy — before many women even know they are pregnant.

**But sometimes statistics like these don’t illustrate the true magnitude of a problem. [That’s why I found this graphic from the New York Times so helpful — and so profoundly disturbing:]([link removed][]([link removed]

[![Abortion rights over time]([link removed] "Abortion rights over time")]([link removed] arc of the moral universe might bend towards justice, as Dr. King famously said, but the arc of justice here in the United States has bent decidedly against southern women.

Because of far-right, anti-abortion women-hating crusaders across the south, **thousands of women will now be forced into healthcare decisions they aren’t comfortable with** — decisions they wouldn’t have chosen if access to reproductive healthcare was still just a few dozen miles away, and ones that may put their own health at risk.

In many ways, Florida had become a safe harbor in the post-Roe South for women needing reproductive healthcare. With that safe harbor now eliminated, we're all with left with few options.

**But there’s still hope.** Florida voters have the opportunity in this November’s election to reinstate access to abortion.

And if Florida voters can do that, legislators across the south will get the message loud and clear that shutting down women’s reproductive healthcare is not something we the voters will tolerate.

**[With your help, Mothers for Democracy is fighting to help Florida women restore abortion access.]([link removed][We'll be supporting the efforts on the ground to pass the Florida Constitutional Amendment on abortion this election. And we'll be working every day to make sure as many voters as possible get to the polls this November to make their voices heard.]([link removed]

**We aren’t going to ask nicely to get our rights back. We’re going to take them back at the polls.**

[![Mothers for Democracy Logo]([link removed] "Mothers for Democracy Logo")]([link removed] For Democracy / Mothers Against Greg Abbott is **the largest coalition dedicated to defeating the extremist MAGA movement in Texas.** While we don’t agree on every topic, we all agree the Texas GOP isn’t Texas values.

Since 2021, we’ve been helping lead the Democratic resistance in Texas, we’ve organized thousands of local voters and our public issue campaigns have reached millions of Texans in key battleground areas. Now, we’re backed by thousands of Texas parents who are mobilizing in their own neighborhoods to ensure the Texas we hand over to the next generation is better than the one we've inherited.

We’re sick and tired of being linked to a handful of extremist MAGA spokesmen—divisive politicians like Ken Paxton and Ted Cruz. We know it’s going to take all of us to defeat them this election cycle. **The power of mothers and others like us means we know we can do it**: It’s time for democracy to prevail.

100% of our work is powered by individual donations and our average donation is just $23. We can’t stop until our children have the future they deserve. So this election cycle, we’re taking down Ted Cruz and dozens more of his Texas MAGA cronies. With you by our side, we’ll deliver the kind of leadership everyone living in Texas can be proud of.
