John,
For the first time since the 1940s, employees at an automaker in the South have voted to unionize, with the Chattanooga plant becoming the first-ever foreign automaker in the region to do so. The approximately 5,500 Volkswagen employees who courageously stood up for their right to organize and collectively bargain for better working conditions have set an inspiring example.
But this fight is far from over. As the UAW now looks ahead to an upcoming union vote by 5,200 workers at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance, Alabama, right-wing extremists across the South are redoubling their efforts to undermine labor organizing through misinformation and intimidation.
That's why Congress must take immediate action to pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.
The PRO Act would be a game-changer for workers seeking to exercise their fundamental right to form a union and advocate for improvements in pay, benefits, safety, and more. By strengthening protections against employer retaliation, enforcing meaningful penalties for companies that violate workers' rights, and eliminating obstacles to collective action, this landmark legislation would help level the playing field and ensure workers have a fair shot in their fight for economic justice.
Tell Congress to side with working people, not with the powerful corporate interests seeking to strip them of their voice by passing the PRO Act now.
Organizing victories like the one in Chattanooga show the potential for a resurgence in worker power, but also how urgently additional safeguards are needed.
Anti-worker politicians and corporate interests have put up fierce resistance to the Chattanooga union drive, and are now gearing up to do the same in Alabama. Without the PRO Act, courageous workers seeking to organize will remain vulnerable to underhanded union-busting tactics.
The recent surge in successful union drives across the country, from Starbucks to Amazon to Volkswagen, demonstrates that American workers are ready and willing to stand together and demand better.
Now it's time for our elected leaders to do their part. Tell Congress to listen to the clear will of the people and pass the PRO Act without delay.
Let’s keep building an economy that puts workers first.
