One year ago, Nancy Pelosi’s House majority passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act.
This bill is designed to get dark money out of politics, strengthen ethics in government, and strengthen voting rights. It’s designed to restore the American people’s faith in a government that works for them, not the highest bidder. Its aims are supported by 82% of all voters.
One year later, it sits untouched in the Senate. Trump won’t push for it because it requires candidates for president to disclose their tax returns. And Mitch McConnell called the bill, which would stop partisan gerrymandering and restore protections from the Voting Rights Act, a “power grab.” For someone who’s built his career on staying in power despite being wildly unpopular in his home state, it makes sense that he’d see fair elections as a threat.
