Hello John,

This morning our team took this photo above ^^^ during our meeting, holding our signs to stand up for owls and other birds held captive, as part of our #ZooAwarenessWeekend coming up this week! :D

And we need you to join us and get involved too!

This year we are focusing on owls held in captivity. Sadly thousands of them are bred and kept captive for bird of prey displays, tied down and denied their freedom, all for human entertainment.

So this weekend there are loads of ways you can get involved and fight for the freedom of owls!
  1. Download our poster here, take a photo of yourself with it, tag us and post on social media (don't forget to use the hastags #zooawarenessweekend #tetherandtorment #letbirdsfly !)
  2. OR why not get crafty and make your own poster? I am sure you can do better than our team!
  3. Get friends and family in your house to get involved!
  4. If you're having a group video call, why not get everyone to hold up a sign and grab a screenshot? Like we did!

Why owls?

Owls make up almost half of birds exploited in bird of prey centres and displays. These birds are removed from their parents, often before they hatch from their egg, and are manipulated by humans to perform on command.

Flying displays give the impression of freedom but the 'handler' has control over the bird. They only get to fly for mere minutes at a time. They are kept in cramped, barren enclosures between shows.

Our undercover investigation found that owls were spending hours being tied down, unable to fly. This was despite industry guidelines stating owls should NOT be tied down (tethered).

These birds are wild animals, capable of flying vast distances, with amazing capabilities. All of this is denied to them when they are held captive against their will.

So this is why we need to take action!

Please get involved this weekend if you feel well enough. This is a great way to stay active for animals whilst staying safe! Don't forget to follow us on social media (links below!) to join our other online actions this week!

Whatever you do, let us know and we can share too! The more of us fighting together the better for owls and other birds. Thank you.

For the animals,
