It’s World Press Freedom Day, friend.

Now more than ever, Canadians are counting on reliable news – and they understand that a free and open press is critical to the functioning of a strong democracy.

But here’s the scoop: while freedom of the press is something our Liberal team takes seriously, Pierre Poilievre has been insulting journalists and threatening to defund the CBC and Radio-Canada.

This would mean cutting thousands of jobs, cutting access to important information in rural and remote communities, and cutting French content in Francophone communities.

From asking their supporters to help defund the CBC, promising to sell off CBC headquarters to turn it into housing instead of proposing any real housing solutions, or attacking journalists when they ask tough questions, Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party’s plans to defund and destroy public broadcasting couldn’t be more clear.

Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau and our Liberal team are supporting journalists, and ensuring Canadians have access to reliable news through the Online News Act, Local Journalism Initiative, and Canadian Journalism Tax Credit.

While Pierre and his Conservatives continue to spread disinformation and undermine the media, we will always support quality, fact-based, and local Canadian journalism.
