This Week's Updates:

CfA Complaint Cited in Mother Jones Report on Undisclosed Political Spending
On Tuesday, Mother Jones published a report on the ecosystem of nonprofits tied to the Bradley Impact Fund, a financial entity created in 2012 that funnels money to organizations pushing election denial and advocating for changes to voting laws. These organizations include 501(c)(3)s like the Washington, D.C.-based Conservative Partnership Institute (CPI), which CfA asked the IRS to investigate for potentially violating its nonprofit status by engaging in impermissible political activity. The Mother Jones coverage mentioned CfA’s complaint regarding CPI, noting that the organization conducts “ideological vetting” of candidates and has employed multiple figures associated with the January 6 attack and President Trump’s efforts to overturn the election. As November approaches, CPI’s senior leaders have begun aggressively spreading disinformation about noncitizen voting – a conspiracy theory that has been echoed by Trump himself.
TTP Identifies Resurgence of Militias on Facebook
This week, TTP worked with WIRED to help identify around 200 Facebook groups and profiles that were being used to spread violent, anti-government messaging associated with established militia movements, including the Three Percenters. TTP first called attention to this activity almost four years ago, when we documented how militia groups were using Facebook to recruit members and plan violent uprisings, partially in response to pandemic restrictions. Inevitably, many of these groups played a role in the violence of January 6, prompting Meta to announce that it was taking steps to identify additional militarized social movements. Now, working with journalist Tess Owen, TTP has revealed that Meta’s content moderation systems are still failing to identify and remove militia groups.

In one case, the leader of the “Confederate States III%” militia used his Facebook profile to share an Instagram Reel, which included footage of Trump’s infamous January 6 speech. The Reel’s text reads: “It won’t be like the last time…We prefer ballots over bullets…But.” As of today, the Instagram account that posted the Reel is still active and has over 140,000 followers.
Senators Press Treasury, Defense Officials on Crypto Sanctions Evasion
On Monday, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Roger Marshall (R-KS) sent a letter to several Treasury and Defense officials urging them to investigate the role of cryptocurrencies in sanctions evasion, with a particular focus on “rogue nations” like Russia, Iran, and North Korea. While anti-money laundering protections make it difficult for these countries to move funds through traditional banking systems, certain cryptocurrency exchanges lack these safeguards and have enabled a flood of illicit transactions. In early April, for instance, the Wall Street Journal reported that a Russian weapons trader had used the cryptocurrency Tether to buy drone parts from a supplier in Hong Kong, evading U.S. sanctions that were imposed in response to the war in Ukraine. Tether is an attractive currency for money launderers because its value is pegged to the U.S. dollar, which keeps it safer from the fluctuations experienced by other digital assets. Shortly after the letter was sent, Tether announced that it had launched “new tools” to combat illicit finance.
