Jim has worked to build a more perfect union ever since he first got involved in civil rights when he joined his local NAACP Youth Council in Sumter, South Carolina. He was elected president at 12 years old -- before he could even drive. He went on to become an early organizer in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and led marches and protests for voting rights and desegregation.
As Congressman for South Carolina’s 6th District, former House Majority Whip, and former Assistant Democratic Leader, Jim continues to work every day to make America's greatness accessible to everyone -- no matter who you are or where you live.
Please join us in congratulating Jim for this honor and thanking him for his unwavering commitment to making our country a better, more equitable place for all.
