Friend,
We know that Republicans at every level have been doing whatever they can to make it harder to vote. But the coronavirus pandemic has moved voter suppression efforts into downright dangerous territory. And I think we can all agree every voter needs to be able to vote safely during a pandemic.
Yesterday, voters in Wisconsin were forced to choose between protecting their health or going to the polls, after the conservative state courts overturned the governor’s executive order to push the primary election to June at the very last minute. What’s worse is that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that mail-in ballots had to be postmarked by yesterday as well, despite the fact that thousands of Wisconsin voters did not receive their ballots in time to comply.
Here in Congress, Democrats are trying to make it easy and safe for everyone to vote by establishing federal vote-by-mail, but Republicans – including President Trump, who has voted absentee himself in Florida – are opposing our efforts.
What happened in Wisconsin yesterday was not a fair election, team. It was a disgrace to our democracy, and unless we act, Republicans will continue to suppress the vote in November because they believe that greater voter turnout threatens their ability to win.
And Trump gave up the game when he admitted his opposition was based on his belief that increased voter turnout with vote by mail would hurt Republicans, and help Democrats, saying "that if [we] ever agreed to it you'd never have a Republican elected in this country again."
If you’re with me and believe that no one should have to choose between protecting their health or exercising their right to vote, add your name to my petition in support of universal vote-by-mail now.
Together, we must show Trump and the GOP that we can not and will not allow our democracy to deteriorate during this pandemic.
Take care,
Adam
