Our Representatives, Senators, Governor and Mayor have been exceptionally responsive and forward-thinking in their response to the COVID-19 emergency. However, they are lagging on several fronts, and this is where we come in. Join us in making 3 calls or emails to hold them accountable.
(Note: it might be more effective to email your MoC’s or use Resistbot since their offices are not likely to be well-staffed at this time due to the shelter-in-place orders).
We’re continuing to pressure Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Speier to get the House to reconvene and vote remotely.
Congress is not scheduled to reconvene from its recess until April 20. That's four days after U.S COVID-19 deaths are predicted to hit their apex (if all goes well), with Maryland not peaking until April 28 and Virginia on May 20. That makes it unlikely that Congress will be able to reconvene at that time. Both Pelosi and McConnell remain opposed to remote voting.
In the meantime, Trump has fired the Intelligence Inspector General for his role in impeachment, issued a signing statement for the third Emergency Relief bill that essentially gutted Congressional oversight, and unilaterally removed the congressionally-mandated Inspector General who was to oversee the $2 Trillion emergency relief funds for the pandemic. The Democratic House has to respond forcefully with more than public statements by Pelosi, but it cannot do so if it cannot work and vote remotely.
Contact your Representative and demand that they enact remote voting.
Meanwhile, we are continuing to address deadly oversights on the state and local level.
Join us in continuing to pressure Governor Newsom to #FreeThemAll. Governor Newsom has the discretion to order ICE detainees to be released back to their communities where they can safely shelter in place.
Urge Governor Newsom to order the release of ICE detainees.
Finally, we’re urging Mayor Breed to provide safe and decent housing to homeless San Franciscans to protect them from the pandemic. Earlier this week, Mayor Breed proposed indoor mass camps to house homeless people, an unhygienic and dangerous idea that received instant backlash. Although she has since walked back the proposal, she remains resistant to procuring hotels for housing. This is a fast moving situation, but we should pressure the Mayor to do the right thing.
Urge Mayor Breed to house vulnerable homeless San Franciscans in hotel rooms, not in mass camps!
ISF Spotlight
We sent a letter to our MoCs’ staffers with our demands for the next stimulus bill. House Democrats are currently drafting a 4th Emergency Relief bill, lwhich they refer to as "CARES 2." Based on the principle of putting people first, and drawing on work from Indivisible National and other organizations, ISF has developed a list of 36 principles, economic relief provisions, and national policies that we believe need to be included in the bill in order to combat the pandemic and rescue the economy in a manner that is fair and just for all. We will pursue this agenda with the MoCs’ staff in virtual meetings and continued email exchanges. Read more on our blog post.
