In the month of April, our team has had frequent visits to classrooms around the Greater Philadelphia area! We’ve run 7 interactive food resource trainings for Penn Charter 6th and 10th graders, La Salle University Nursing Program students, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia first year residents. These trainings are designed to help participants gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of food insecurity and the impact it has on those living in the Greater Philadelphia region. They also include a facilitated discussion about the barriers and shortcomings of our current food system and safety nets, as well as the ways participants can take action to create a world where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives.

POLICY & ADVOCACY

The Road to the Farm Bill: This week, the chairs of the House and Senate Agriculture Committee each released a framework for the upcoming Farm Bill Reauthorization (the piece of legislation that includes SNAP). These frameworks represent competing visions for food assistance in our country.
        • House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson’s bill would result in a roughly $30 billion cut to SNAP benefits over the next decade by keeping future updates to the Thrifty Food Plan cost neutral. This would ensure that SNAP benefits do not keep pace with the cost of a healthy diet.
        • Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow’s framework protects SNAP from cuts and improves and strengthens the program in several ways.

SNAP benefits only provide participants with an average of $6 per person, per day at a time when rates of food insecurity are rising. The Farm Bill cannot cut SNAP benefits in any way.

WIC Public Comment: The Pennsylvania Department of Health is looking for feedback and suggestions about the Pennsylvania WIC Program (Special Supplemental Program for Women, Infants, and Children). This is a great opportunity for former and current WIC participants, stakeholders, and advocates to provide valuable feedback about the challenges and successes of WIC in PA. You can provide feedback by attending one of their upcoming Public Comment Sessions in person, virtually, or by phone.
