The report will show that with no changes, Social Security can pay benefits in full for nearly a decade. We have a decade to act before any benefits are cut―there is no crisis.

But Wall Street billionaires who want to get their hands on Social Security’s $2.7 trillion trust fund pay a lot for PR flacks to get the talking heads on cable news to parrot their talking points. So expect to hear a lot of media arguing that the report proves we have no choice but to cut benefits now to prevent future cuts. Their voices will be as loud as their arguments are asinine. • Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson used his very first floor speech to demand the “immediate” creation of a closed-door commission to cut benefits, and MAGA foot soldier Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington repeatedly attempted to attach legislation creating such a commission to must-pass bills.

• Democrats, on the other hand, have co-sponsored bills to be considered in plain daylight that would expand Social Security and ensure its long-term financing by making the wealthy pay their fair share.

• President Biden is running on a promise to protect and expand Social Security.

Despite what you may hear on the news, the question of whether to cut or expand Social Security and Medicare is a question of values, not affordability. Congress can eliminate the shortfall with legislation that will expand Social Security’s vital benefits without cutting them. All it takes is for the wealthy to pay their fair share.
