I just wanted to make sure you saw Michael’s email. This is one of the most important weeks in the year for us.
Very soon, the 2024 Social Security Trustees Report will come out, and along with it a blitz of Wall Street-funded media attention seeking to paint Social Security’s future as doom and gloom. This narrative plays right into the hands of Republicans who are determined to destroy Social Security. Republicans know that the American people don’t want to see Social Security cut. So they need to convince us that Social Security is doomed.
We founded Social Security Works to fight back at moments exactly like this one. Can you rush a donation to counter the Wall Street PR blitz?

--MICHAEL'S EMAIL--
John,
We just found out: The Social Security Trustees will soon release their report on the health of the Social Security trust fund. This is an annual event, and one that right-wing enemies of Social Security always pounce on.
This year, we’re fighting back.
The report will show that with no changes, Social Security can pay benefits in full for nearly a decade. We have a decade to act before any benefits are cut―there is no crisis.
But Wall Street billionaires who want to get their hands on Social Security’s $2.7 trillion trust fund pay a lot for PR flacks to get the talking heads on cable news to parrot their talking points. So expect to hear a lot of media arguing that the report proves we have no choice but to cut benefits now to prevent future cuts. Their voices will be as loud as their arguments are asinine. We need to be louder.
Social Security Works is mobilizing our allies to counter Wall Street’s PR blitz―but it won’t be cheap. We don’t have unlimited money to launch a propaganda campaign. We have supporters like you. Can you chip in $7 to defeat Wall Street spin and protect Social Security and Medicare?
Here are the facts:
-
Presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump has campaigned by saying “there is a lot you can do…in terms of cutting” Social Security and Medicare, and is reportedly considering defunding both programs if he becomes President.
-
Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson used his very first floor speech to demand the “immediate” creation of a closed-door commission to cut benefits, and MAGA foot soldier Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington repeatedly attempted to attach legislation creating such a commission to must-pass bills.
-
Democrats, on the other hand, have co-sponsored bills to be considered in plain daylight that would expand Social Security and ensure its long-term financing by making the wealthy pay their fair share.
-
President Biden is running on a promise to protect and expand Social Security.
Despite what you may hear on the news, the question of whether to cut or expand Social Security and Medicare is a question of values, not affordability. Congress can eliminate the shortfall with legislation that will expand Social Security’s vital benefits without cutting them. All it takes is for the wealthy to pay their fair share.
Rush a donation today to fight back against the Wall Street-funded anti-Social Security PR blitz!
Thank you,
Michael Phelan
