Yesterday marked two years since we collectively realized the Supreme Court would overturn Roe v. Wade and roll back nearly 50 years of reproductive freedom for women across the country.

On May 2, 2022 Politico published a leaked draft majority opinion, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision by the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court officially rejected women’s reproductive freedom on June 24, 2022.

In the years that followed, some states, like California, shored up reproductive rights by enshrining this fundamental health care right into our constitution. However, 26 other states passed abortion bans.

The impact has been heart-wrenching. A ten year old girl in Ohio had to travel across state lines to terminate the pregnancy from her rapist; a mother in Texas was court-ordered to carry a terminal and high-risk pregnancy; a woman in Ohio was jailed for having a miscarriage at home. These highly traumatic cases and their cruelty are getting national attention.

But there are thousands of cases that are unseen. Cases where women aren’t getting the basic health care they need, are suffering emotional and physical damage and for some inexplicable reason, politicians are weighing in on how and when they should have a baby.

The 26 states that passed abortion bans and restrictions have a 3 times higher rate of maternal mortality and a 30% increase in infant mortality compared to states that have protected reproductive rights.

In 2022, Kiley promised Californians that the Dobbs decision was a “States Rights” issue and he wouldn’t jeopardize the constitutionally protected health care of California women.

But months into his term in Congress, he voted for a national abortion ban. Since then he’s been supporting the “Life at Conception Act” – a law that would not only ban abortion at any time, but would also functionally ban IVF and criminalize miscarriages.

Kiley is perfectly willing to overwrite the constitutional protections and freedoms of California women.
