A Stunning Contrast of Two University Lawns: Liberty & Columbia, Light vs Darkness

By: Paul Batura

Just over four hundred miles separate Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia and Columbia University in New York.

Yet, looking at images from both campuses recently, it might just as well be four hundred thousand miles, and maybe not even that close.

Antisemitic protestors continue to fill the lawns inside the gated Harlem campus, with the agitators ignoring university requests to leave. Demands include that the school divest itself from any Israeli partnerships, financial or academic.

Since the encampment began, there’s been violence and unrest – plus the cancellation of in-person classes. Keep in mind tuition at the Ivy League institution, founded in 1754, runs over $86,000 a year.

Meanwhile, the “Academic Lawn” on Liberty University’s campus was equally, if not even more full, but with a significant difference in type and tone.

Christian Surfer Bethany Hamilton Encourages Women to Pursue Motherhood
By: Nicole Hunt

Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer who survived a shark attack in 2003, encouraged women to pursue motherhood at a pro-life event hosted by Save the Storks.

At the age of 13, Hamilton was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing. Instead of succumbing to her life circumstances, she grounded herself in her faith, which she says is a source of “truth, hope and strength.”

She overcame the loss of her left arm and went on to achieve her dream of surfing professionally by the age of 17.

She shared her story in the 2004 memoir Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board. In 2011, Hamilton’s story was turned into the film Soul Surfer, and in 2019, the film documentary Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable was released.

Hamilton sees obstacles in life as opportunities to be unstoppable. Her resilience and unapologetic boldness about her faith set her apart as a counter-cultural role model.

On her website, she boldly asserts, “The strength, identity, and foundation of my life is in the faith that God has given me.”

Since the shark attack over 20 years ago, Hamilton has not only followed her dreams of becoming a professional surfer but also married Adam Dirks, a former youth pastor. They have four children together — three sons and a daughter.

Abortion Remains Highly Profitable Business for Planned Parenthood, New Annual Report Shows
By: Zachary Mettler

For Planned Parenthood — a supposed “nonprofit organization” — abortion is a big and profitable business.

The abortion giant recently released its Annual Report 2022-2023, revealing it performed nearly 400,000 abortions in 2021-2022. Planned Parenthood’s services data lags behind the rest of the information in its report.

Abortion

The Charlotte Lozier Institute, a pro-life research organization, analyzed Planned Parenthood’s new “Above & Beyond” annual report and publicized the following:

-
Planned Parenthood performed 392,715 abortions in 2021-22 — an increase of over 18,000 (5%) from the previous year, and an increase of 20% over the past 10 reports.
-
The number of patients (2.05 million) decreased by 80,000 from the previous year.
-
In 2021-22, abortions made up 97.1% of Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy resolution services, while prenatal services, miscarriage care, and adoption referrals accounted for only 1.6% (6,316), 0.9% (3,604), and 0.4% (1,721), respectively.
- For every adoption referral in 2021-22, Planned Parenthood performed 228 abortions. Over the past 10 annual reports, the ratio was approximately 134 abortions for every one adoption referral.

Taylor Swift and the Important Difference between Venting and Rumination
By: Emily Washburn

Taylor Swift took over the news cycle again this month after releasing her chart-topping new album, The Tortured Poets Department. Pulling from her tried-and-true themes — love, heartbreak, destiny and of course tragedy, TTPD delivers plenty of the confessional lyrics that made Swift famous.

The star has grown remarkably comfortable with detailing some of her most vulnerable, unflattering moments to the masses, capturing the tumultuous emotions of love and loss in relatable ways.

There’s no debate: fans love her for it.

What’s less clear is whether Swift’s magic blend of counseling and capitalism models healthy coping skills for kids.

By all accounts, Swift uses songwriting to process and release negative emotions and experiences. This kind of venting can be healthy, investigative journalist Abigail Shrier writes in her book Bad Therapy, so long as it doesn’t become compulsive.

When a person vents negative feelings or experiences over and over, however, they are engaging in rumination.

Defined as a “style of thinking characterized by past injuries or personal problems,” Shrier cites research showing rumination increases people’s likelihood of becoming depressed. Good therapists, she writes, tell patients why pathologically re-hashing old hurts is an unproductive thought process and teach them how to stop ruminating.

Title IX Redefinition of ‘Sex’ Faces Defiance and a Flood of Lawsuits
By: Jeff Johnston

The U.S. Department of Education recently issued a rule redefining “sex” in Title IX to include “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.”

Multiple states, school districts and women’s groups are now pushing back against the rule, which essentially guts what Title IX was intended to do: provide equal opportunities for girls and women in education.

The redefinition follows a diktat from the White House, issued on January 20, 2021, that required every federal agency to implement “sex discrimination” policies that included gender identity and sexual orientation.

States and school districts are refusing to implement the radical rewrite of Title IX that permits men to freely access women’s locker rooms, bathrooms and sports, and groups are filing lawsuits against the new rule.

Here’s a rundown of some of the opposition the DOE faces across the country.

- Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters directed all school districts in the state not to comply with the Title IX rewrite, saying it was “one of the most illegal and radical moves we have ever seen from the Federal Government.”

-
Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr. issued a similar directive to local school districts, saying, “Florida will fight this … no education institution should begin implementing any changes.”
