Dear John,

I’ve got some amazing news for you. We’ve defeated the UK government over its weak climate plan in the High Court.

With the support of thousands of you, we took the government to court in February – alongside ClientEarth and Good Law Project.

Today’s landmark legal ruling is the government’s plan to cut carbon emissions is unlawful. Crucially, the judge has also ordered the government to re-write the plan in the next 12 months.

Our lawyers and campaigners will strive to make sure it delivers the UK’s climate targets. Including its pledge to cut emissions by over two-thirds by 2030. But we’re relying on your continued support.

So if you can, please join us with a monthly donation to Friends of the Earth.

If you’ve been following Friends of the Earth for a while, you’ll know that achieving this important win is many years in the making.

This is actually the second time we’ve teamed up with ClientEarth and Good Law Project to defeat the government’s climate plan in court.

We won last time too. But after the government responded with yet another weak plan we weren’t going to let them off the hook. So with the help of donors, we took them to court again.

But this story goes even further back than that – over 15 years. The reason we were able to take the government to court in the first place was because of the Climate Change Act, which sets legally binding targets for the UK to cut its greenhouse gas emissions.

And the reason the Climate Change Act exists is because Friends of the Earth and supporters like you campaigned for it back in the 2000s.

So please do celebrate today’s historic news. However long you’ve been with us, your support is making a difference. We believe the court’s decision now gives us a much stronger basis to demand effective climate action from this and the next government, whoever it is.

And if you want to play an even bigger role in this long-running fight for the future of our planet, please consider setting up a monthly donation today.

Thanks for everything you do – whether you stay up to date with our work, sign our petitions or donate what you can.

Fighting for action on the climate crisis can feel like an uphill battle at times. But in the courtroom, our legal team were encouraged knowing we had your backing. And it’s on days like today I truly appreciate what we can achieve together.

With hope and gratitude,

Katie
