We’re also happy to report that our stream with Congressman Scott Peters (CA-50) went well last week, bringing over 5,000 of viewers across our platforms, and raising thousands of dollars for Representative Peters as well. We’re hoping to do more streams like this throughout the year as the election gets underway, so keep an eye out for that! If you want to watch the recording of the livestream with Rep. Peters, click HERE. [[link removed]]

We’re also excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Tour to Save Democracy, a Gen-Z led organization that is going on a bus tour across the country this summer to help flip red seats blue and fight for a better future for young people. Steering Committee Elections

The Center for New Liberalism’s Steering Committee aims to represent the Center for New Liberalism’s chapters and members in CNL’s strategic planning, provide a voice and forum for the direction of organization-wide initiatives, and advise on our mission to promote liberal ideas in the United States and worldwide. The CNL Steering Committee is composed of nine voting members, including seven domestic members, and two international members.

With NLAS right around the corner, the time has come to elect a new steering committee, and filing for the 2024 Center for New Liberalism Steering Committee is now open for eligible CNL chapter leads and dues-paying members. This year’s elections will take place online and in person at the New Liberal Action Summit in Washington, D.C. Online voting will open on June 7th, but anyone planning to vote in person should plan to vote at the conference.

We encourage everyone interested in getting more involved with the Center for New Liberalism to consider running. To learn more about the election process, and to declare your candidacy, click the button below.

West Seattle Blog - Does the draft 'One Seattle Plan' envision enough housing? That question takes centerstage at West Seattle open house [[link removed]]
Ft. Sanders Lauture, Seattle New Liberals | April 3

"Sanders Lauture, 29, a South Lake Union resident who was in attendance, said he believed the plan 'doesn't do enough to address the current realities of the cost of housing in Seattle [and] the rise of homelessness."

WSJ | U.S. Aid Is a Lifeline for Ukraine's Struggle to Hold Off Defeat [[link removed]]
Daniel Michaels and James Marson

After months of delay, Congress finally passed a vital aid package for Ukraine, giving them the resources they need to continue to hold off Russia’s invasion. This article from the Wall Street Journal provides a good overview of how the new aid package will help Ukraine but also makes it clear that more will need to be done for Ukraine to be able to expel Russian troops from the country, and preserve its democracy.

Bloomberg | Britons Finally Taste Full Brexit as Costly Border Checks Begin [[link removed]]
Ellen Milligan

We’ve long opposed the United Kingdom’s choice to leave the European Union, and this article reveals that Britons are starting to realize the consequences of their actions now too, as they’ve lost the benefits of being EU citizens, including open borders and free trade. With Britain’s economy still stagnant, we can only hope that the next government finds a better path forward that recognizes the benefits of the free movement of people and goods.

Slow Boring | Young Voters Care About the Same Stuff as Everyone Else [[link removed]]
Matt Yglesias

Our friend Matt Yglesias dives into a recent Harvard Institute of Politics poll that reveals some interesting findings about what young voters care about most heading into the election. The poll found that the top three issues for young people are culture war issues, but in fact, issues like cost of living and housing. If Dems want to win and inspire young voters in 2024, one of the best ways to do that might to adopt pro-housing policies, like we’ve seen center-left candidates in the UK and Canada do recently as well.

Defining New Liberalism: Building a Better Business Environment in LA [[link removed]]
Los Angeles is a region of creativity, and not just for big and small screens. Pioneering enterprises in aerospace, retail, marketing, health, science, and energy have all called – and in many cases still do call – Greater LA home. However, a combination of high costs, taxes, permitting requirements, and regulations have caused many businesses to take their value creation to other regions and states. What steps do we need to take and barriers do we need to remove to regenerate an environment of entrepreneurship in our region? In the fourth installment of the Defining New Liberalism series, the LA New Liberals will be sitting down with several local business owners to discuss current barriers to entry for Angeleno entrepreneurs and how we can make LA a better environment for fostering the enterprises of tomorrow.

Should We Ban Kids from Social Media? Ft. Shoshana Weissman [[link removed]]

There's been an increased focus lately on the mental health crisis amongst teens and young people, and specifically the role that smartphones and social media might play. Should we be taking action to restrict young people's access to smartphones and social media?
I'm joined by Shoshana Weissman of the R Street Institute, and we debate the benefits vs the harms of social media, whether or not to support government regulations, and how we can build a healthier childhood for kids growing up today.

America, China, and TikTok Ft. James Palmer [[link removed]]

The 'TikTok ban' bill has been attached to a must-pass package of foreign aid, making it more likely than ever that TikTok will face a forced sale or ban in the United States. James Palmer joins the podcast to talk about the potential ban of TikTok in this member-exclusive podcast. We discuss the CCP's relationship with companies like ByteDance, the free speech implications of banning a social media platform, and whether or not the CCP should be allowed to control a major platform like TikTok.

Liberalism in India Ft. Gurcharan Das [[link removed]]

The latest episode in our 'Liberalism Around The World' series examines liberalism in India with author Gurcharan Das. Mr. Das is the author of the new book, Dilemma of an Indian Liberal, and we talk about the history of liberalism in India, political vs economic liberalism, how imperialism and caste politics have influenced Indian liberalism, and why liberal values are so important for India today.

Closing Remarks

The 2024 primary season has kicked into full gear and the general election continues to get closer every month. There’s a lot at stake in this year’s election , and it’s more important than ever for all of us to do the work to continue advancing our pragmatic agenda in our local communities and get people to the ballot box in November.

If you aren’t already involved, we encourage you to get more involved with your local CNL chapter, and consider joining their leadership team! Not sure if you have a chapter in your area? Check out the chapter map on our website to find out, and sign up for email updates from your local chapter!
