Following the 2019 destruction of the site's museum by a tornado, Caddo Mounds State Historic Site will celebrate its official reopening on Saturday, May 18. The ribbon-cutting ceremony commences at 11:30 a.m. with speakers reflecting on the importance of restoring the site and the resiliency of the Caddo Nation. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the new $2.5 million visitor center and reconstructed grass house and participate in various outdoor activities.

Historic Overnights, is a THC initiative spotlighting immersive stories and behind-the-scenes content about historic stays across Texas. We’re excited to launch this effort in another historic county, Mason, with our partners, Mason County Historical Commission and the Mason Chamber of Commerce. From rustic cabins to historic bed and breakfasts, here are some of the stories waiting to be discovered:
At Texas Historical Commission state historic sites across the state, you can step back into history. From May 19-25, experience tours and hands-on activities that demonstrate how Texans of the past spent their daily lives. From ornate Victorian mansions to everyday inns, frontier forts to 20th-century leaders’ homes, there’s a state historic site to fit every interest.
