The state’s current election plan will disenfranchise thousands voters who are disproportionately Black and Brown, immigrant, poor and immunocompromised.

State officials have an obligation to make voting accessible, safe, and healthy for all Georgians.

With the Georgia Department of Public Health confirming 8,818 COVID-19 cases among Georgians and 329 deaths, it is clear that the state must make emergency accommodations to ensure voters don’t not have to choose between voting and their health.

That’s why yesterday, Advancement Project National Office and our partner New Georgia Project sent a letter to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger demanding emergency accommodations be made for voters statewide. To ensure all voters have access to the ballot in the state’s upcoming primary elections, the joint letter demands the Governor and the Secretary of State immediately:

  • Mail absentee ballots to all registered voters - not just active voters - for the primary and general election with return postage;
  • Streamline the absentee ballot application and return process;
  • Expand Georgia’s early voting hours and locations;
  • Allow voters to cast a ballot at any polling place in-person on Election Day;
  • Count all ballots postmarked on or before Election Day.

Read our full list of demands in our letter and press release.

The state’s current election plan will disenfranchise thousands of voters who are disproportionately Black and Brown, immigrant, poor and immunocompromised. By making voters go through a laborious 5-step process to cast an absentee ballot, the state has made vote-by-mail inaccessible to thousands of eligible voters.

This is unacceptable.
