Hi John,
As Product Director at Action Network, I work with our partners to brainstorm, build, and launch new features designed to take your email and organizing programs to the next level. So far this year we’ve already released tons of great features you can use to mobilize your activists, build your list, and raise more money for the progressive movement. This email is intended to give you a quick look at the highlights!
Features in this update:
-
Gamechanger: New Fundraising Clips
-
Organizing Power Up: Action Builder’s Conversation Button
-
Workflow Helper: Layout Templates
-
Callback feature: Anonymized Target Booster
Gamechanger: Supercharge your fundraising with new fundraising clips
Action Network Clips enable you to personalize your emails and mobile messages with information that’s unique to the activist you’re sending to. For example, this very email uses a {first_name} clip to address this email to you!
In a fundraising context, clips are useful for thanking an activist for donating a specific amount on a specific day (for example, “Thank you for your $10 donation on 4/2/24!”).
Now you have access to a whole new set of fundraising personalization clips. Each new clip listed below includes date ranges, so you can personalize your fundraising asks based on average donation since 2021 or between January 1, 2023 and January 1, 2024, for example. Learn more here.
- Average donation
- Count of donations
- Total amount
- First donation date
- First donation amount
- Note: Existing clips 'latest donation', 'highest previous contribution', and 'latest amount' all have dates ranges now as well!
Organizing Power Up: Streamline your work with Action Builder’s Conversation Button
Action Builder (actionbuilder.org) is a powerful organizing tool built hand-in-hand with organizers to give you the information you need to grow power and win real change. Action Builder has supported hundreds of organizers dedicated to bridging the gap between voting and organizing, transient events and enduring movements, and mobilizing people and nurturing leaders.
We understand that sometimes users only need to capture a few essential details during a conversation. That's where the Conversation Button comes in handy. With this new feature, users can seamlessly capture key information without the need for extensive setup or task creation. Streamline your workflow and capture essential details effortlessly with the Conversation Button!
Did you know you can also add pronouns to entities in Action Builder? Pronoun fields show up in most places next to the entity name: wall chart, entity profile, top search, etc.

Workflow Helper: Speed up your email formatting with Layout Templates
If you use our layouts feature to format your emails, you now have the option to use three new system-wide templates for fundraising, actions, and newsletter-style emails when you use the drag-and-drop email editor. You can use them as is or duplicate them and customize them to make them your own. Find them on the Email Wrappers & Layouts page via the Details Menu.
You can find these new layout templates on the Email Wrappers & Layouts page.
Callback feature: Reactivate your list with the Anonymized Target Booster
Sending mass emails to the ‘actives’ on your list — the folks who engaged with an email by opening, clicking, or taking action, or who subscribed to your list in the last 180 days, for example — is a best practice that I hope all of our partners adhere to (if you need a refresher, check out our Deliverability Guide). Sending to your active subscribers is a crucial pillar of maintaining good deliverability, but what do you do with the chunk of your list that falls outside of that actives query? You can bring them back on board with the help of the Anonymized Target Booster!
You can now use the Anonymized Target Booster to help re-engage activists who haven’t been active with your group recently by collaborating with the progressive movement, while lowering your deliverability risk. After your Action Network group joins the Anonymized Target Booster, you will be able to target activists subscribed to your email list who have opened or clicked emails sent by other groups who have also joined the Anonymized Target Booster, thus giving you access to more data about activists on your list so you can target them effectively. No personal information (such as email address) is shared, only anonymous email open and click data.
You can opt in on your group’s settings tab, or when targeting an email.
I recently hosted a deep dive training into this feature with Amy Chin-Lai, Solutions Engineer at Action Network, where we walked through use cases, how to opt in, and more. You can watch the recording of that training on Youtube here.

On behalf of all of us at Action Network & Action Builder, I hope that these features help you supercharge your program! We’re always hosting trainings, deep dive webinars, and demos, which you can find on our events calendar here. Check out recordings of past trainings on our Youtube channels for Action Network and Action Builder.
Thanks for all of your work building progressive power!
Take care,
Mari Vangen-Strom
