Stay At Home—For How Long?

What to Know: Throughout the country, stay-at-home orders are being extended.

The TPPF Take: Officials must seek a balance when issuing life-altering edicts like stay-at-home orders.

“Like any exercise of governmental power, such a sweeping pronouncement should be least restrictive between its ends and civil liberties,” says TPPF’s Robert Henneke. “How do we keep people safe, while doing all we can to ensure they have jobs to go back to when this is over? And orders should be based upon the latest and best information. We should be ready to revisit public policies that affect us all as we get new data.”

What Comes Next

What to Know: The COVID-19 pandemic—and its economic fallout—will have a profound effect on the state budget.

The TPPF Take: Lawmakers have a new tool for ensuring that state government stays lean.

“Under the new Senate Bill 68, passed last year, every time an agency is up for Sunset review, it will undergo a strategic fiscal review by the Legislative Budget Board,” says TPPF’s Sam Johnson. “The goal of the review will be to improve state agency operations and help limit growth in state spending.”
