By a 5-4 decision Monday night, the Supreme Court disenfranchised tens of thousands of Wisconsin residents whose mail-in ballots were delayed due to the coronavirus. This followed the right-wing Wisconsin Supreme Court's decision hours earlier to override the Democratic governor's attempt to push back yesterday's election to protect people's safety.
Now, Elizabeth Warren has announced a new plan to protect voters' right to vote in November's election, which includes nationwide vote by mail, an extended early vote period, and more!
Congress is currently working on a fourth coronavirus relief bill, and so far there's no indication that they are prioritizing voter protection as part of the response. With the new reality we are living in, we need the federal government to lead in protecting the right of every American to vote this November. Anyone who wakes up on Election Day and wants to vote should be able to vote.
Elizabeth Warren's new plan fully recognizes both the new challenges we face due to the coronavirus and the existing barriers that prohibit millions of Americans from voting.
That's why Warren's new plan includes:
- Nationwide vote by mail
- 30 days early vote
- No voter roll purges
- End ID requirements
- $4 billion to states for the transition
- Additional funds to USPS
- Hazard pay for poll workers
We cannot allow Trump and Republican politicians to steal our elections by forcing people to choose between voting and their own safety. It's time for Democrats in Congress to put forward a real plan to protect every person's right to vote, so that no one is forced to make this choice.
Democrats in Congress must hear that this is a top priority for the American people. The more people who sign the petition, the more that both Congress and the media will have to pay attention. Please sign. Then forward this email to 5 friends and ask them to join the call.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
