Dear Neighbor,
I want to invite you to join Pierce’s Pledge, United Playaz, and community members tomorrow, Friday, May 3, from 4:30 - 6:30 PM at Civic Center Plaza for “Pawz for Pierce’s Playaz.”
In 2021, Pierce Hu, a 9-year-old, tragically lost his life in a murder-suicide involving his father. In response, his mother Lesley channeled her grief into advocacy, championing a policy change in family law practices. Her initiative, Pierce’s Pledge, calls for family law attorneys to require their clients to disclose and temporarily store any firearms they possess in a third-party location, aiming to prevent similar tragedies.
Through Pawz for Pierce’s Playaz, Pierce’s classmates and the middle school kids of United Playaz (UP) are uniting to raise awareness and to build the youth voice for gun violence prevention. Dogs will compete in various competitions, including a Race, Best Dressed, Most Obedient, Highest Jumper, Honorary Awards, and Best in Show. All funds raised will support gun buybacks.
United Playaz is a long-time violence prevention and youth development organization dedicated to providing youth with a safe and positive environment in which they can grow. Under Rudy Corpuz’s leadership, UP has hosted multiple gun buybacks, taking hundreds of guns off the streets each time.
We all know the urgency with which the crisis of gun violence must be addressed. While there's no singular solution to combat the epidemic gripping our nation, we must harness the tools that are available to us. I'm deeply appreciative of the invaluable efforts of both organizations, and I encourage you to lend your support to this inaugural event!
