Dear friend,

Two years ago today, Politico published a leaked draft of the Dobbs decision, marking the beginning of the end of the federal right to an abortion.

By June, the far-right majority on the U.S. Supreme Court would overturn nearly 50 years of protections for abortion and reproductive health care, triggering an avalanche of cruel, deadly bans across the United States — including right here in Florida.

In its wake, our right to choose, to privacy in the doctor's office, and to self-determination are no longer guaranteed. They now depend on which state a person calls home, whether they can afford to leave, and whether medical providers are willing to take the legal risks that may arise from doing their job.

And two years ago today, Florida Republicans like Rick Scott rejoiced.

For years, the Sunshine State was a safe space for abortion access across the South, thanks to the right to privacy granted in our state constitution.

But when Gov. Ron DeSantis took power, he shaped our state Supreme Court in his vision of an extreme far-right Florida. They upheld his already-illegal 15-week ban, and by ruling 6-1 against statewide protections for abortion rights, they greenlit his stricter six-week trigger ban.

Look, Florida already ranks #2 in deaths due to complications from pregnancy or childbirth among the states. Black Floridians are three times as likely to die in childbirth or from related complications.

And under this new law — which took effect just yesterday — Floridians seeking abortions in the first trimester now face some of the strictest requirements of any ban nationwide.

Some will be forced to travel 14 hours or more to receive abortion care. Some will be turned away from doctors' offices in the event of a life-threatening medical emergency. Some Floridians will die.

And this dangerous new reality we're now living under was only possible thanks to what happened two years ago today.

Yet in spite of a supermajority of Florida voters in favor of the ballot initiative to reinstate abortion rights — including 53% of Republicans — our senator, Rick Scott, has made passing a nationwide ban on abortions his #1 mission in Washington.

Like so many Latinos, I know what it means to have your freedoms stripped by authoritarian leaders who want to control every aspect of your life. My family came to America to escape those authoritarians — so I refuse to stand back and watch as they try to take over here.

I refuse to let authoritarian laws like these risk the lives of Florida's mothers and the future of Florida's families.

And I refuse to let extremists like Ron DeSantis and Rick Scott take away rights from me, my daughters, or yours.

I say enough is enough — that's why I'm running to retire Rick Scott. Rick Scott has proudly backed the 6-week ban and a national abortion ban. And as I travel statewide to spread the word about this movement, one of my top priorities is to make sure Floridians know about our opportunity to take back the right to choose from GOP authoritarians this November.

I vow to never stop fighting until reproductive freedoms are enjoyed by every Floridian, and every American, once more.

And friend, I hope I can count on you in the fight with me.

Thanks for reading,

Debbie
