Thousands Join Campus Antisemitism Crisis Webinar

During yesterday’s webinar about the alarming campus climate, the ADL community heard from Rep. Ritchie Torres, a champion in the fight against antisemitism and in support of the Jewish community. Torres talked with ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt about new ways to take action to address the inconsistency of the Federal government in enforcing existing rules that would help combat antisemitism on campus. Torres warned about the current “concerted effort to indoctrinate our students with a hatred of Israel.”

ADL VP for Advocacy Shira Goodman welcomed student leader Barri Seitz along with Francine Ephraim, a parent of a college student. Seitz gave advice to future students and emphasized the importance of supporting embattled Jewish students so they don’t feel isolated, and Ephraim talked about how she and other parents have been pushing for action to keep students safe.

Tell university leaders to keep our campuses open and safe from hate. As the semester comes to an end, our campuses are facing serious disruptions and a troubling increase in antisemitism, impacting classes, finals and special events. These constant disturbances to learning and activities are unfair and must stop. Use the drop-down menu on ADL’s new action to select a school and urge their leaders to protect students' rights to a safe and meaningful end of the semester.

Antisemitism Legislation Moves Forward: This week, the House passed the bipartisan Antisemitism Awareness Act, which reinforces the use of the

National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism, this week ADL met with Members of Congress to urge support for the Countering Antisemitism Act (CAA), which will ensure that the National Strategy’s policies endure beyond the formal May 25, 2024, conclusion of the plan. Eight Senators — evenly split between parties — cosponsored the Senate version, and the House is adding more co-sponsors from both parties. ADL continues to spearhead efforts to pass the CAA, which is the most comprehensive effort in Congress to combat rising antisemitism.

Chaos at Columbia: Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, it did: protesters stormed and occupied Hamilton Hall in the early hours of Monday morning. Late Tuesday night, NYPD was called in and cleared Hamilton Hall. Hundreds of protesters have been arrested and the encampment is clear. NYPD has been asked to maintain a presence on campus until May 17 to ensure encampments are not reestablished.

A Need for New Leaders at Northwestern: On Monday, the President of Northwestern University made a deal that is reprehensible and a case study in failed leadership. He awarded protest groups with scholarships, professorships and a renovated community home; he said the encampment can stay until June 1; and he created new pathways to implementation of BDS. ADL is joining with StandWithUs and the Brandeis Center in calling on President Schill to resign.

How People with Jewish Usernames are Abused in Online Games: Harassment is unfortunately far too common when people play competitive online games. A new study by the ADL Center for Technology and Society examines how expressing Jewish identity gets played out in the massive gaming universe of online multiplayer games; 44% of those in the survey experienced some form of harassment. Jews and all other people must be able to fully express their identities without worrying that they will be harassed by other players.

Making Progress This Week

Jewish American Heritage Month, which started on May 1, comes at a time of alarmingly high antisemitism. At this challenging time, ADL’s Education team has put together a rich list of resources so students can explore the Jewish experience — including the history, culture and achievements of Jewish people as well as the antisemitism that has been faced by Jewish people throughout history.

We encourage you to share this set of educational and family resources from ADL to bring Jewish American Heritage Month to schools, communities and homes in May and throughout the year.

“Israel does not set policy from a Jewish restaurant in Philadelphia.” — Oren Segal, VP of the ADL Center on Extremism. While criticism of Israel isn’t inherently antisemitic, when it veers into anti-Zionist conspiracy theories, harassment or vandalism, it crosses the line into antisemitism.
