After Kim Reynolds stamped her iron fist on the Iowa Republican party, she got to work pushing Iowa to new extremes – paying no attention to people’s disapproval. That includes:
Giving taxpayer money to private schools without any income restriction,
Making it harder for families in need to receive food assistance by implementing complicated new asset tests,
Passing a ban on abortions after six weeks in Iowa, and without many of the meaningful exceptions seen in abortion bans implemented elsewhere,
Dismantling Iowa’s AEAs, even after Iowans spoke out in historic force in support of Iowa’s AEAs and the incredible benefits they provide to Iowa public schools,
Concentrating authority in the governor’s office and slowly eroding the checks and balances that exist – for a reason – in the Iowa Constitution,
Taking control away from local public officials such as implementing strict limits on new spending by cities and counties,
Oppressing freedom of speech and expression in Iowa schools, as she did with her book ban,
And more.
Kim Reynolds hand-picked her state legislature for the specific purpose of passing bills regardless of whether or not Iowans support them. Now, we’re seeing the effect of her iron rule.
Maybe we can’t replace Governor Reynolds until 2026 – but we can take away her power, friend. That starts at the state legislature. It’s no longer a question of whether or not Iowans should elect Democrats this Fall – it’s a must. If we want to protect Iowans from far-right extremism right here at home, and if we want any kind of ability to stop the damage that’s been done, we need to elect reasonable Democrats to take back as many seats as we can in both the Iowa House and the Iowa Senate this Fall.
Let’s get to work.
Sincerely,
Rita Hart
Chair of the Iowa Democratic Party
