My name’s Ghazala Hashmi, and I wanted you to hear it from me: I’m running for Lieutenant Governor of our great commonwealth of Virginia. I never thought I’d run for office. I spent most of my professional life in a college classroom, working at a community college and helping develop education opportunities for Virginians. But after Donald Trump was elected and started putting his bigoted rhetoric into action against American Muslims, hardworking immigrants, women, and LGBTQ+ Americans, I knew we had to do something.

That’s why we launched my campaign for State Senate in 2019: to give voice to the voiceless. We were the underdogs. We faced a Republican playbook straight out of the MAGA movement. But we made history and flipped that seat from red to blue because we ran a community-centered campaign. Our victory gave us the one-seat majority in the Senate and ensured a Democratic trifecta for the next two years. Together, we showed that a Muslim woman can take on the MAGA movement and WIN!

But we didn’t stop there. In the State Senate, I passed laws to advance racial and economic justice, expand Medicaid, strengthen gun safety laws, fight for more school funding, and roll back Republican restrictions on abortion.

If we want to protect our freedoms, stand against hate, and build a future that uplifts us all, including our most vulnerable, we must always fight for what is right. It’s time we had a Lieutenant Governor who prioritizes serving the people rather than serving an extreme, dangerous MAGA agenda that would gut our schools, ban books, and control our bodies.
