Dear John,

We’re now into the third week of the coronavirus lockdown. But while we long for the day we’re out the other side, we can’t afford to ignore what the long-term impact of this public emergency could be.

History demonstrates a stark reality: those at the margins of society often feel the sharp edges of a crisis first and for the longest.

This is why Liberty’s role is more important than ever and why we’re now fighting to keep human rights and freedoms at the centre of the UK’s strategy on dealing with this pandemic.

Call on the Government to protect rights in coronavirus fight

The Government response so far hasn’t been encouraging.

The hostile environment is as alive as ever, leaving undocumented migrants too fearful to seek medical attention even at this critical time.

Vital safeguards and protections for those of us who are disabled have been suspended. People experiencing mental health crisis have also had essential checks removed.

And everyone’s civil liberties have been stripped, with the police given extraordinary powers which are already being applied unevenly.

These powers could last for more than two years, way beyond the expected length of the pandemic.

We’re all prepared to make changes, but history shows that those in power will often overstep the mark in times of crisis. Hard-won rights and freedoms are often taken away again under the cover of an emergency. And temporary suspension has a habit of turning into permanent erasure.

We can’t let that happen.

Sacrifices must be made, but everyone’s rights and freedoms must be protected. Over the weekend thousands have added their names to this commitment. Add yours today.

Our rights are hard won but easily lost.

Thank you for your support.
