Student-led protests and encampments are forcing Western media and universities to confront their governments’ shameful roles in supporting Israel’s genocide. Students face danger from counter-protesters, arrest for trespassing on their own campuses, and suspension or even expulsion. They are showing us there is a generational divide when it comes to support for apartheid. Students led the way in protesting the wars in Vietnam and Iraq, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement, and they are leading the way now in calling for an end to Israel’s war on Gaza and its occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
While pundits and government leaders claim these protests are anti-Semitic and violent, we’ve been there and know that such charges are specious. We can see that many of the protesters are Jewish and they are a vital part of this movement; we also see that when violence occurs, it is after counter-protesters (pro-Israel advocates) and police appear on the scene.
