Hi John,
In this newsletter, we’re highlighting Village of Wisdom ([link removed] ) and Harvard’s READS Lab ([link removed] ) , who built on our support and received federal grants to expand and scale their impact on schools and students.
Village of Wisdom enhances student academic outcomes by harnessing the power of parent-teacher partnerships. With CZI’s support, Village of Wisdom was able to advance its work, making it possible to receive federal recognition which includes $4 million in funding. To date, Village of Wisdom has worked with 180 teachers and reached approximately 1,600 students in Durham, North Carolina.
The READS Lab at Harvard University launched and, with support from CZI, has scaled its Model of Reading Engagement ([link removed] ) (MORE) program to reach 20,000 students in grades 1 through 3. The new nearly $8 million federal grant paves the way for MORE to expand to 4th grade and will effectively double its reach. In North Carolina, students who participated in MORE’s elementary grade science and social studies curriculum for three years demonstrated higher achievement across subjects including reading and math, and the gains persisted after students no longer received MORE lessons. READS Lab is part of Reach Every Reader, ([link removed] ) a collaboration funded by CZI between neuroscience and education research teams at Harvard, MIT’s Integrated Learning Initiative, and Florida State University that is taking a multi-pronged, multidisciplinary approach to building and implementing early literacy tools and interventions.
It's always exciting to see our partners expanding their impact. Congratulations to Village of Wisdom and Harvard’s READS Lab on the well-deserved recognition from the U.S. Department of Education.
Sincerely,
Sandra Liu Huang
Head of Education
