Last week, I joined a roundtable discussion about the war in Gaza with Jewish and Arab American students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I spent most of the time listening. The students talked about the conflict, the protests, and their personal experiences since the war began. While the students rarely agreed, they were thoughtful, respectful, and they listened to each other. In the end, they were exchanging phone numbers so they could stay in touch.

We can learn a lesson from these students: while we may disagree, we can still treat others with kindness as we seek understanding and solutions. I left Wisconsin feeling hopeful and inspired. We need to have conversations like this in every community and college across the country.
