No images? Click here Dear John, We work with many inspiring people around the world. Today we pay tribute to one of our allies, Benna Buluma, fondly known as Mama Victor who was killed in the recent flooding in Mathare, in Nairobi Kenya. Mama Victor was the inspirational team leader of the Mothers of Victims and Survivors Network, documenting cases of executions, enforced disappearances, police brutality and other injustices. She was also a fierce advocate for women’s rights – you can see her here in our video on women’s experiences of gender based violence and vaccine injustice during the covid pandemic. Mama Victor, along with some of her family members was killed in Kenya’s devastating floods which have left at least 170 people dead and more than 200,000 displaced. People in Kenya are on average, responsible for 0.5 tonnes of carbon emissions. In contrast, people in the UK are responsible for more than 9 times this (4.7 tonnes.) Yet, like many countries in the global majority world, Kenya suffers disproportionately from the devastating effects of climate change. We send our solidarity to Mama Victor’s family, fellow activists and all who are suffering from and defending against climate injustice.
