Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch announces funding for STEM Lab at Northpoint Elementary School

STATEHOUSE (May 2, 2024) ? Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch today announced that Northpoint Elementary School is an award recipient of the 2024 NLGA Leutenant Governors' STEM Scholarship Program. The National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) will award the school $500 as part of a national call for applications for funding STEM programming and curriculum in schools.

?The introduction of hands-on opportunities in STEM can help blossom a lifelong interest in STEM principles,? said Lt. Gov. Crouch, Indiana's Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development.? ?To prepare the students of today for the careers of the 21st century, providing opportunities in STEM at an early age is critical.?

Funding will be used to create and equip a STEM lab at Northpoint Elementary, with STEM being further integrated into the school's curriculum using hands-on experience with robotics tools, coding tools, and science lab resources. The STEM lab will serve 615 students in K ? 5th grade.

"We are grateful to the NLGA and Lt. Gov. Crouch for making it possible for us to apply for STEM scholarships," said Jenny Doms, the teacher who applied on behalf of Northpoint Elementary. "Our school is working on its STEM certification, and we are so excited to have some of the funding to create a STEM lab in our building.? Our goal is to provide opportunities for students to engage in STEM based activities as much as possible.? Thank you for making our vision a reality."

NLGA opened the application period for the STEM Scholarship Program in February 2024. The application process was competitive, with NLGA receiving more than 200 requests for STEM funding from schools in 28 states and territories. Twelve schools in 12 states were awarded $500 - $1,000 for STEM-related expenses.

?As the seconds-in-command in state and territorial government, lieutenant governors are uniquely poised to lead on STEM education,? said NLGA Executive Director Julia Brossart. ?By supporting STEM-related activities in schools across the country, we can encourage a long-term interest and passion in STEM education in America?s youth.?

The scholarship is administered by NLGA, the nonpartisan, nonprofit association for the nation?s seconds-in-command, and sponsored by ACT, the education and career readiness nonprofit.

Public, private and tribal schools serving pre-K ? 12th grade students in the 50 states and five U.S. territories were invited to apply for funding to support STEM-related activities, programming, curriculum, equipment, and other expenses. Funding will be provided to all winning schools in May.? ?
