Dear Friend,
Thank you for your commitment to the fight to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia.
Advocacy is one of the most powerful tools we have to fight for the needs and rights of everyone impacted by Alzheimer's disease. There are nearly 7 million Americans living with this devastating disease and more than 11 million family members and friends providing unpaid care — and they need our support. Today, I ask you to be bold and raise your voice and speak up on their behalf. We need your help to ensure that our nation continues to address Alzheimer's and all other dementia as a priority at this historic time.
Right now, advocates are urging Congress to continue our progress by reauthorizing the Building Our Largest Dementia (BOLD) Infrastructure for Alzheimer's Act. Since it was signed into law in 2018, this critical legislation has been creating an Alzheimer's public health infrastructure across the country, implementing effective interventions such as increasing early detection and diagnosis and reducing risk.
In the years since the enactment of the BOLD Act, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has made 66 awards to 45 state, local and tribal health departments. These awards enable departments to work towards implementing public health strategies that promote brain health, address dementia, and support those affected by this disease. In 2023 alone, the CDC announced 43 BOLD award recipients, the most in a single year since the law was passed.
The BOLD Act also provides funding for the BOLD Public Health Centers of Excellence and has increased data analysis and timely reporting on Alzheimer’s, cognitive decline, caregiving and health disparities.
We must keep this momentum going strong. The bipartisan BOLD Reauthorization Act was introduced this February into the House of Representatives and the Senate. This critical legislation would strengthen and renew our country's commitment to addressing Alzheimer's as a public health issue for another five years.
With a projected nearly 13 million Americans living with Alzheimer's by 2050, this global public health crisis will only continue to grow. The time to act is now.
We need you as a caring member of our community to raise your voice and urge Congress to pass this critical piece of legislation.
Thank you for your support as we further our mission to lead the way to end Alzheimer's and all other dementia — by accelerating global research, driving risk reduction and early detection, and maximizing quality care and support.
Acting together, we'll make a difference.
Sincerely,
Robert Egge
Chief Public Policy Officer and AIM Executive Director
