This month, I want to take a moment to amplify the accomplishments and experiences of AANHPIs across this great country. From the Chinese railroad workers who built our nation’s first transcontinental railroad to the Native Hawaiian women who fought for the women’s suffrage movement in Hawaii, to the countless AANHPI individuals who broke the glass ceiling in government, business, and the labor movement, we stand today on their shoulders. California is home to over six million AANHPIs, making us the fastest-growing ethnic group in the state, and I am dedicated to fighting for all of us. Just in the past few years, Congress has achieved major accomplishments on behalf of the AANHPI community. To address the scourge of anti-Asian hate, we passed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act. We pushed back against the racial profiling of Chinese scientists and ended the China Initiative—a Trump-era Department of Justice program that was targeting Chinese researchers. Then, we also successfully stopped Republican efforts to revive it. I will always use my seat at the table to push for the rights and needs of our communities. As the first Chinese-American woman elected to Congress and the Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), I know how important representation is in government. If you want the government to work for you, it has to look like you, too. CAPAC is committed to promoting legislation that will serve and protect AANHPI people. CAPAC also focuses on educating the public and our colleagues on the history and hardships that our communities face—all while accomplishing the greater goals of the AANHPI community. I’m not the only one doing the work, though. From my colleagues in the House and Senate, all the way down to local governments, AANHPIs are gaining representation across the country. A total of 41 AANHPIs have held office in the California legislature, and that number is only growing. With more representation in government, AANHPIs go from marginalized to the margin of victory. This Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, let us all take a moment to amplify these voices and push for more policies that will protect and serve these communities both in California and around the United States.
