This June, Virginia has a statewide Republican Primary for a U.S. Senate seat, and the 7th and 10th U.S. Congressional Districts will each hold both a Republican and a Democratic Primary for the U.S. House of Representatives. National Fentanyl Awareness Day is May 7 and is a day of action for community members to come together to ensure they understand the risks of fentanyl, educate their family and friends, and learn how to take steps to prevent overdose deaths. Prince William Community Services and the Prevention Coalition of Greater Prince William are hosting two virtual screenings and panel discussions, May 7 and May 13, featuring the 25-minute educational video called “The New Drug Talk.” Produced by parents who’ve endured the profound loss of children to fentanyl poisoning, “The New Drug Talk” provides factual information and practical tools you can share with your family and friends. The Prince William County Office of Community Safety is hosting an open house event called "Fostering a Safe PWC Together” on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dr. A.J. Ferlazzo Building, 15941 Donald Curtis Drive in Woodbridge. The goal is to provide residents with the opportunity to learn more about the Office of Community Safety (OCS), other county agencies and community partners that collaborate together to create safer neighborhoods for everyone. The OCS is committed to working collaboratively with residents, community-based organizations, businesses and government to foster a thriving and secure community through prevention and intervention. The open house is an excellent example of this collaboration and offers an opportunity to unite the community with a shared mission of an even safer community.
Every May, the county’s Department of Transportation partners with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Commuter Connections Program to hold Bike to Work Day, encouraging commuters across the region to leave their cars at home and experience the benefits of biking to work. The Prince William County Department of Economic Development and Tourism has kicked off their annual Business Appreciation Month, featuring the fan favorite Make Your Mark event the evening of May 16. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors unanimously adopted the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Budget during its meeting on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The FY25 Budget starts July 1, 2024, and advances the county’s strategic priorities, builds internal capacity to advance capital projects, addresses the ratified collective bargaining agreements with Police and Fire and Rescue unions, invests in modernizing information technology digital services for better constituent services, and funds critical needs to improve effective and efficient service delivery. The adopted $1.80 billion general fund budget also meets the Board’s policies and principles of sound financial management.

The Prince William Area Agency on Aging Meals on Wheels program delivers food to residents 60 and over who are unable to leave their homes. But the program volunteers bring more than food — they also check on their client’s wellbeing and offer social interaction to people who may be lonely. The Agency on Aging is currently recruiting volunteers to be able to increase their coverage in the area and make deliveries five days per week.
The dams in Prince William County are safe and well maintained, however, it is important to know your risk and know how to respond in the event of a dam emergency. As National Dam Safety Awareness Day is held annually on May 31, the county’s Office of Emergency Management is encouraging all homeowners and business owners to visit pwcva.gov/damsafety and use the interactive map to see if flash flooding from a dam failure could impact their property.
