John,
On May 1, 1886, workers across the U.S. began to strike, demanding an eight-hour workday.
Since then, workers have won additional labor rights including the minimum wage, child labor laws, anti-discrimination protections, and more. But that is just the beginning.
We are in the midst of a labor movement with growing worker power not seen in decades.
When the United Auto Workers went on strike in Michigan last September, I was proud to stand in solidarity with autoworkers outside of the Ford Truck Assembly plant in Wayne, MI:
My father was a UAW autoworker, so I have personally seen how labor rights transform families and communities. His union job enabled our family to get healthcare for the first time.
The UAW has had significant victories over the past year, including by using the power of strikes.
But, even as workers continue to organize for better pay and safe working conditions—from autoworkers to warehouse workers to baristas—they are being met with unprecedented levels of union busting by large profitable corporations, which pay their CEOs astronomical sums while denying working people the ability to support themselves and their families.
On this May Day 2024, join me in adding your name as a grassroots co-sponsor of the PRO Act to strengthen workers’ rights. Click here to take action today and stand in solidarity with working people everywhere.
The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act would:
-
Penalize employers that interfere with their employees’ organizing efforts;
-
Make explicitly clear that employers cannot interfere with employee unionization voting procedures;
-
Enhance support for worker strikes and boycotts;
-
Repeal so-called “right-to-work” laws, which were created during the Jim Crow era to divide Black and white workers and weaken unions’ strength.
For too long, our economy has been rigged to serve those at the top. We need to pass legislation like the PRO Act to build an economy that works for everyone, not just the millionaires and billionaires.
Add your name as a grassroots co-sponsor of the PRO Act today.
Thank you for fighting for the rights and wages of working people everywhere.
In solidarity,
Rashida
