🏘️ May Is Affordable Housing Month!

Affordable housing month door with doormat that says our future begins with home

Affordable Housing Month kicks off today! This month is all about celebrating and uplifting our affordable housing movement and the possibilities that affordable housing solutions bring to our neighbors and communities.

This year we’re exploring the theme, “Our Future Begins with Home”, because we know that a thriving Bay Area begins with everyone having a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Building on prior years’ momentum, NPH is bringing in new audiences to join us in writing a new future for the Bay Area through partnerships with the Oakland Roots Soccer Club, movie theaters, 5 Bay Area county library branches, and more to come throughout May.

Hosted by Swinerton, the summit is an opportunity to create connectivity within a talented pool of diverse suppliers looking for contracting opportunities. 🏗️ Affordable Housing Legislation Advances!

Last week, AB 2728 (Gabriel) passed out of the Assembly Local Government committee! AB 2728 is an amendment to SB 4(Wiener) that will make it easier to build affordable homes on land owned by faith organizations. The bill now heads to Appropriations and then off to the Assembly Floor.

Your letter of support can help us get this bill to the finish line. Help us make the case for more affordable homes by sending in your support letters for AB 2728. Submit an organizational support letter to the California Legislature today!

🏘️ Surplus Lands Act Brings New Affordable Housing to the Bay Area!

Aerial view of potential land used for housing in Alameda

The Surplus Lands Act (SLA) is a critical affordable housing production tool that has brought new possibilities for the use of public lands for the public good. Thanks to the SLA, The Housing Authority of the City of Alameda (AHA) announced this month that over 100 new affordable homes are coming to the City of Alameda via two new housing developments (The Estuary I and Linnet Corner).

Meanwhile in Oakland, crowds attended the groundbreaking for the East 12th parcel, the site that spurred the creation of the modern SLA. The parcel will be jointly developed by NPH members – half will be 91 affordable units developed by EBALDC and The Unity Council – and half will be 94 affordable units developed by SAHA.

Passed into law through AB 1486 (Ting) in 2019 with NPH’s strong support, the SLA remains a vital tool in the Bay Area's scarce land market.
